PLA on Institutional Autonomy in the European Higher Education Area

The Malta Further and Higher Education Authority (MFHEA) is organizing a Peer Learning Activity (PLA) on Institutional Autonomy in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), taking place in hybrid format in St Julian’s on 13 October, alongside the 5th meeting of the BFUG Working Group on Fundamental Values. This event will bring together national representatives, experts, students and stakeholders to explore how institutional autonomy, one of the six fundamental values of the EHEA, can be understood, supported and monitored, with contributions from EUA, the University of Malta, ENQA and the Magna Charta Observatory. The PLA is organized as part of the NewFAV2 project and will conclude with the project team’s initial results on monitoring institutional autonomy across the EHEA.
2026 DAAD Fundamental Academic Values Award: Winners announced

On 8 October 2026, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) announced the winners of the 2026 Fundamental Academic Values Award: Dr Olga Ceran from the University of Saint-Louis in Brussels (Belgium, 1st place), Cristina Mazzero from the University of Trento (Italy, 2nd place) and Dr Dylan Couck from Ghent University (Belgium, 3rd place). Presented for the third time after the 2022 and 2024 editions, the award is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) and granted within the DAAD project “Bologna Hub”. It recognises early-career researchers who have made an outstanding scientific contribution to the preservation and advocacy of fundamental academic values in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA). The NewFAV2 project team warmly congratulates the winners on their research.
Reporting on Fundamental Values of Higher Education in the European Higher Education Area

UEFISCDI is organizing a Workshop on Reporting on Fundamental Values of Higher Education in the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), taking place in hybrid format in Bucharest on 18 September at the UEFISCDI office. This event will bring together national representatives, experts, and stakeholders to discuss how fundamental values — academic freedom, institutional autonomy, participation of students and staff in higher education governance, academic integrity, and public responsibility of and for higher education — are monitored and reported on across the EHEA.
